Though liposuction was first performed in Europe, tumescent liposuction, utilizing only local anesthesia, was invented in America by a dermatologist named Dr. Jeffrey Klein. Tumescent liposuction is so named because administration of local anesthesia into the operative site causes the tissue to swell, or become tumescent. Liposuction was initially performed using general anesthesia, which is expensive to provide, exposes the patient to certain dangers and prolongs postoperative recovery. Some physicians still perform liposuction using general anesthesia.  However, once Dr. Klein discovered a way to perform liposuction using only local anesthesia, without the need for general anesthesia, liposuction could be performed safely and effectively, and with fewer intraoperative and postoperative complications.
